GenCon and Oz Gaming Convention Circut

Postby frankjb on Fri Jul 16, 2010 7:21 pm

It sucks GenCon 2010 was cancelled, it sucks that many of us had accommodation booked and flights paid for already.

It would of been MontyHaul Gaming's (http://www.montyhaul.com) second GenCon, it's disapointing because we had such a good year last year with the introduction of our table but I guess it just means we have to look at going to other conventions.

Dose anyone have a good site or knowledge of gaming conventions in Oz (suitable to show our table at)?
This is what I have found so far:

AVCon (missed it July)
Arcanacon (missed it Jan)
Conquest (missed it April)
Supernova http://www.supanova.com.au/ held over 4 states (missed it April - June)
CanCon missed it
http://www.austgamesexpo.com (missed it January)
Phenomenon http://pheno.org.au/ (missed it June)
Pandemonium http://adelaidegamersassoc.tripod.com/pandemonium/ (17-19 September Adelaide)
Check out the Tribute gaming table at http://www.montyhaul.com

Unicon (http://www.unicon.asn.au/)- Melbourne, October
Sydcon (http://www.sydcon.info/) - Sydney, October
MacQuarieCon (http://www.macquariecon.org/) - Sydney, December

I recall seeing a fairly comprehensive list, but the only ones google is showing me are waaaay out of date.

Aussiecon (September, in Melbourne) is technically a science fiction convention, but it's the WorldCon which means that although the potential gamers might only be 10 to 15% of the total attendance there'll still be more gamers at it than any other convention this year.

They may even have a dedicated gaming stream; I haven't thought to check yet.

EDIT: As far as I can tell there's no dedicated gaming stream which is odd. But holy crap look at that "also attending" list.

That list makes me deeply deeply sad, since I will not be at AussieCon... (in other words, wow!)

Oh look George RR Martin is attending. I guess that's another day he'll be spending not writing the next god damn book.

He will, however, almost certainly be mercilessly pimping the HBO TV series. If we're lucky, he'll have footage.

I'm taking my copy of (book) Human Nature - as well as the other Cornell Virgin novels - to get signed.
Bit sad that Rob Shearman doesn't appear to be coming back - he came to Swancon a couple of years ago and was awesome.

I am reliably informed now that WorldCon DOES in fact have a gaming stream, although there's no evidence of it on the website yet. I'm hoping to run something at it.

Update because The_Exile was asking: it seems Rob Shearman will be at Worldcon - or at least he's down to do readings and signings, so unless he's appearing by some kind of magical telepresence then it seems likely he'll be physically there.
